چکیده

Blocking the propagation of contagions in populations has many applications, such as stopping the dissemination of leaked information and impeding the spread of an ideology or opinion. Several methods exist for blocking contagions by removing key or critical nodes from a network representation of a population. Some methods, based on network topology alone, run very fast, but their performance can be inferior to slower-running blocking methods that also take into account contagion dynamics. Further, most works focus on simple contagions, where a node can contract a contagion from one neighbor. In contrast, complex contagions propagate via interactions with two or more neighbors possessing a contagion. Little work has been done on blocking complex contagions. We present an approach for selecting critical nodes for simple and complex contagions. In selecting critical nodes, our hybrid method uses topology-only information and thereafter couples those results with information about contagion dynamics. We evaluate our method using three different kinds of social networks from the literature.

Diffusion in Complex Networks With Overlapping Community Structure

In this work, we study diffusion in networks with community structure. We first replicate and extend work on networks with non-overlapping community structure. Then we study diffusion on network models that have overlapping community structure. We study both contagions in the standard SIR model, and complex contagions which are thought to be better approximations of some social diffusion proces...

Virality Prediction and Community Structure in Social Networks

How does network structure affect diffusion? Recent studies suggest that the answer depends on the type of contagion. Complex contagions, unlike infectious diseases (simple contagions), are affected by social reinforcement and homophily. Hence, the spread within highly clustered communities is enhanced, while diffusion across communities is hampered. A common hypothesis is that memes and behavi...

Complex Contagions Models in Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks

Information contagions is one of the key applications in opportunistic mobile social networks (OMSNs). Most of the recent work only considers the simple contagions, in which the “infected” node will infect each of its opinion-free neighbors through simple contact. However, when the behaviors, beliefs, or preferences spread through the social contact, the willingness to participate may require i...

Complex Contagions: A Decade in Review

Since the publication of “Complex Contagions and the Weakness of Long Ties” in 2007, complex contagions have been studied across an enormous variety of social domains. In reviewing this decade of research, we discuss recent advancements in applied studies of complex contagions, particularly in the domains of health, innovation diffusion, social media, and politics. We also discuss how these emp...

Social contagions on time-varying community networks

Time-varying community structures exist widely in real-world networks. However, previous studies on the dynamics of spreading seldom took this characteristic into account, especially those on social contagions. To study the effects of time-varying community structures on social contagions, we propose a non-Markovian social contagion model on time-varying community networks based on the activity...
